Greek Endeavor: Sharing The Truth Through Relationships

by Tyler Zach

To bring some of you up to speed, Greek Endeavor was started three years ago to equip Greeks to lead in their fraternity or sorority House and to expose them to spiritual truth. But the movement is a little different than most Christian organizations.

You won’t find a worship band when you walk in. You won’t find a pastor. You won’t find a sermon. But what you will find is a community of Christians and non-Christians actively engaged in each other’s lives.

When I was a junior in college and God got a hold of me, I started to invite all my fraternity brothers to Campus Crusade for Christ. But I had the hardest time getting them to come consistently. They had a hard time fitting into a Christian culture that they weren’t used to. Most of them had never worshiped before – especially with a guitar and drums. Most of them had never heard a bible-preaching sermon. So, they said thanks, but no thanks to me.

That is when we came up with the idea of Greek Endeavor. It was birthed out of a dream to contextualize the gospel for this specific set of leaders on campus. The result? We are seeing 50-60 fraternity and sorority members show up every week at UNO. The majority of those students have never been to a healthy growing local church. They don’t come to the meetings because of music or great preaching. They come because they want to learn how to become better leaders and because they want to be around the Christians and see how they live out their spiritual walk.

Our main meetings are geared toward talking about leadership and relationships. Everyone’s needs are met here and it is totally a neutral, non-intimidating discussion time. Then we allow them to leave if they wish or stick around for our Legacy studies – which are spiritual growth groups (bible studies, book studies, etc.). We give them the option to leave because we never want to become a bait and switch movement.

Thank you for being a part of this movement. Many influential campus leaders in the Greek system at UNO are hearing the truth for the first time and seeing radical changes in their life by simply being a part of a transformational, and sometimes messy, gospel-centered community.
